You are not buying a cask. You are buying time.

Most things lose value the moment you own them. A cask does the opposite. You buy it near the lowest point on its value curve, the year it's filled.

Every year after that, the spirit becomes scarcer, more concentrated, and harder to replace as it matures and you own that scarcity from day one.

FAQ'S

How much whisky is in a cask?

Enough for roughly 300 to 400 bottles at drinking strength, depending on cask size and how much evaporates over the years (the "angel's share"). At 21, that is enough to keep, share with everyone they care about, sell some and bottle the rest, or any combination. It is a meaningful quantity, not a token.

How do I prove I own my cask?

After purchase, you can download an electronic certificate of ownership from your Portfolio page. To do this, you'll first need to verify your account via Account > Verify Account.

Why are whisky casks a popular alternative investment?

Whisky casks are a tangible asset that has historically appreciated with age. Unlike stocks and shares, the value of a maturing cask is tied to a physical product with genuine scarcity. Decant Index has facilitated over 2,000 successful exits returning more than £7m to investors, backed by decades of whisky expertise and over £100m in stock sourced and priced competitively. Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns.

Can I taste the whisky before I buy a cask?

Yes. Sample at our tasting suite at 105 Piccadilly, Mayfair, where our team will help you explore distilleries and find the right cask for your taste and long-term intent before you commit.

Can I buy a cask that's already aged?

Yes. We list casks at every age, from new make filled this year through to mature stock with decades behind it. Older casks cost more, because whisky casks generally appreciate as they mature: more years in bond means more scarcity, more concentration, and less liquid (the angel's share). If you want a cask that will be 25 years old in five years rather than 25, an already-aged cask is the route.

Can I visit my cask?

Yes. Decant Index can arrange group viewing days at the bonded warehouses in Alloa, Scotland, and where possible pair these with a distillery tour. Bonded warehouses are secure working sites with strict health and safety rules, so visits are by arrangement only.

Can I bottle my own whisky from the cask?

Yes. When you're ready, you can have the cask bottled — under your own label if you like subject to duty and bottling costs.

How do I know my cask is authentic?

Every item listed on the Decant Index marketplace goes through in-house authentication and rigorous due diligence before listing, confirming authenticity and ensuring it stacks up on value.

What does it cost to store a cask?

Storage and insurance runs roughly £75 per year per cask.

How do I sell my cask?

Decant Index offers several exit options. You can list your cask on the Decant Index marketplace and sell to another buyer, sell back to Decant Index directly (after the recommended hold period and subject to demand), or bottle your cask through the Decant Bond team to either sell, gift or drink. Each cask holds 300-400 bottles at maturity.

Fees do apply: please see our terms and conditions. If you are purchasing wine, whisky or rum cask for investment, you must consider the cost of maintaining your cask. You maybe liable for storage and insurance. The price will be dependent on how comprehensive the policy is and premiums may increase on an annual basis. It is advisable to perform regular health checks on your cask or wine every three years. Decant Index may occasionally require certain information from you to comply with HMRC requirements.

Casks: Cask services are chargeable to you, including regauging, samples, and photographs. All casks are stored within HMRC-bonded warehouses and are subject to strict rules and regulations set by HMRC. If you wish to sample or bottle your cask, duty and VAT will be due before the whisky or rum has been bottled and the finished goods are removed from the HMRC-bonded warehouses. This remains the responsibility of the cask owner. “New Make” spirit has to be matured for 3 years, during which time its alcoholic strength could reduce. In addition, the volume of spirit will decrease over time (“the Angels’ share”). For the product to be classed as “whisky”, it must retain a minimum strength of 40%.
