FAQ'S

Do I take delivery of my cask?

You can, but most investors choose not to. While your cask matures, it is held in secure, HMRC-approved bonded warehouses in Alloa, Scotland. You won't pay excise duty for as long as it remains there, and most cask investors sell before bottling. If you do want to visit or take delivery, Decant Index can help arrange this — though taxes and other fees may apply. You can track your asset and view all storage documents at any time from your Portfolio page.

How do I sell my cask?

Decant Index offers several exit options. You can list your cask on the Decant Index marketplace and sell to another buyer, sell back to Decant Index directly (after the recommended hold period and subject to demand), bottle your cask through the Decant Bond team and sell the bottles, or arrange your own exit through a private buyer or your own bottler. Note that capital gains on cask sales are currently tax free for UK investors, though bottled whisky sales are not.

Why are whisky casks a popular alternative investment?

Whisky casks are a tangible asset that has historically appreciated with age. Unlike stocks and shares, the value of a maturing cask is tied to a physical product with genuine scarcity. Decant Index has facilitated over 2,000 successful exits returning more than £7m to investors, backed by decades of whisky expertise and over £100m in stock sourced and priced competitively. Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns.

How is pricing determined on Decant Index?

Every opportunity is priced transparently. For casks, listings show litres of alcohol, strength, and cost per litre. Where available, you'll also see regauge reports, storage and insurance details, and comparable market pricing, so you can assess value with confidence before buying.

How do I know my cask is authentic?

Every item listed on the Decant Index marketplace goes through in-house authentication and rigorous due diligence before listing, confirming authenticity and ensuring it stacks up on value.

How do I prove I own my cask?

After purchase, you can download an electronic certificate of ownership from your Portfolio page. To do this, you'll first need to verify your account via Account > Verify Account.

Can I visit my cask?

Yes. Decant Index can arrange group viewing days at the bonded warehouses in Alloa, Scotland, and where possible pair these with a distillery tour. Bonded warehouses are secure working sites with strict health and safety rules, so visits are by arrangement only.

Can I get a sample from my cask?

Yes. Decant Index can arrange for a sample from your cask to be bottled and delivered to you. Taxes and other fees may apply.

Is whisky investment tax efficient?

Capital gains on cask sales are currently tax free for UK investors, as whisky casks are classified as a wasting asset. However, this does not apply to bottled whisky sales. We'd recommend consulting a tax adviser for guidance on your personal circumstances.

What happens to my cask while I hold it?

Your cask continues to mature in the bonded warehouse. You can monitor its value, location, and supporting documents at any time through your Portfolio page. Decant Index operates its own warehouses with advanced technology that continuously monitors the movement of your assets.

Fees do apply: please see our terms and conditions. If you are purchasing wine, whisky or rum cask for investment, you must consider the cost of maintaining your cask. You maybe liable for storage and insurance. The price will be dependent on how comprehensive the policy is and premiums may increase on an annual basis. It is advisable to perform regular health checks on your cask or wine every three years. Decant Index may occasionally require certain information from you to comply with HMRC requirements.

Casks: Cask services are chargeable to you, including regauging, samples, and photographs. All casks are stored within HMRC-bonded warehouses and are subject to strict rules and regulations set by HMRC. If you wish to sample or bottle your cask, duty and VAT will be due before the whisky or rum has been bottled and the finished goods are removed from the HMRC-bonded warehouses. This remains the responsibility of the cask owner. “New Make” spirit has to be matured for 3 years, during which time its alcoholic strength could reduce. In addition, the volume of spirit will decrease over time (“the Angels’ share”). For the product to be classed as “whisky”, it must retain a minimum strength of 40%.
