Enough for roughly 300 to 400 bottles at drinking strength, depending on barrel size and how much evaporates over the years (the "angel's share"). At 21, that is enough to keep, share with everyone they care about, sell some and bottle the rest, or any combination. It is a meaningful quantity, not a token.
After purchase, you can download an electronic certificate of ownership from your Portfolio page. To do this, you'll first need to verify your account via Account > Verify Account.
Yes. The transfer date is set by you. It can be a 21st, a 30th, a wedding anniversary, or any date you choose.
No. The transfer date is entirely up to you. A 21st is the most common choice, but it works just as well for a 30th, a graduation, a wedding, a 50th anniversary, or any date that matters. You can also hold the barrel indefinitely and never transfer it.
Yes. We list barrels at every age, from new make filled this year through to mature stock with decades behind it. Older barrels cost more, because whisky barrels generally appreciate as they mature: more years in bond means more scarcity, more concentration, and less liquid (the angel's share). If you want a barrel that will be 25 years old in five years rather than 25, an already-aged barrel is the route.
Yes. Decant Index can arrange group viewing days at the vaults in Alloa, Scotland, and where possible pair these with a distillery tour. Vaults are secure working sites with strict health and safety rules, so visits are by arrangement only.
They do not have to take it. You can hold the barrel in your name indefinitely, sell it on the marketplace, or bottle it. The 21st transfer is an option, not an obligation.
The barrel passes through your estate like any other asset. If your will specifies it, it goes directly to them.
Storage and insurance runs roughly £75 per year per barrel.
Decant Index offers several exit options. You can list your barrel on the Decant Index marketplace and sell to another buyer, sell back to Decant Index directly (after the recommended hold period and subject to demand), or bottle your barrel through the Decant Bond team to either sell, gift or drink. Each barrel holds 300-400 bottles at maturity.
